I am getting this error when I try to upgrade the firefox browser.

root@willis:~/SystemActions # apt-get install mozilla-firefox

and I am unsure why this happened, or how to proceed.

The history of the system is that I

installed it from a Warty CD,
added universe to the sources.list file
apt-get install <a whole pile of goodies>
removed universe from the sources.list file (leaving cdrom & security)
attempted above command
also attempted apt-get upgrade

Not if I can help it. I strongly prefer a command-line solution. Do others have suggestions?

Do what niko suggests.

Also, if you prefer command-line, use aptitude instead of apt-get.

Adding the -f switch, as niko says, has no effect, I think that's because I'm not specifying packages that will fix the problem.

However, I will try aptitude, and if not, I'll try it with the -f switch.

I don't know if this helps, but isn't mozilla-firefox now a dummy package that just refers to plain old firefox?

I tried a plain apt-get -f install (no packages) and got a different error.

I found aptitude a bit confusing. What do you suggest next?

I have solved the second problem ( dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/perl-base_5.8.4-2ubuntu0.4_i386.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite `/usr/lib/perl/5.8', which is also in package liblockfile-simple-perl)

It seems that apt-get (and aptitude) is too smart for it's own good, at times.

I did it like this:
root@willis:~ # dpkg -r liblockfile-simple-perl debmirror
(Reading database ... 84601 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing debmirror ...
Removing liblockfile-simple-perl ...
Then I went on to solve the first problem (wrong perl-base version)
root@willis:~ # apt-get install perl-base
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
The following packages will be upgraded:
perl-base
1 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 154 not upgraded.
3 not fully installed or removed.
Need to get 0B/728kB of archives.
After unpacking 0B of additional disk space will be used.

(Reading database ... 84584 files and directories currently installed.)

Thanks allot nick4mony.

This got rid of a similar problem I had with my Debian server.
The package names were a little different, but removing a package the way you showed, solved my problem.
