It just released a 'security update' KB951748, which kills the internet access of anyone who uses ZoneAlarm (probably half the worlds internet users!!).

Good job I had Ubuntu so I could get internet access. Mind you when Ubuntu
connected successfully I knew it was the Microsoft Update which has screwed me up.

The very reason why I replaced our Company's isa server with IPCop Firewall. I configured it to block all micro$oft updates from propagating my intranet (since some of the staffs still use m$ windoze), though not advisable, but still, I don't trust micro$oft.

micro$oft's tactic of eliminating "firewall" competitors, probably :(

*Puts on his best tin foil hat*

Did this happen by accident or by design? A competing product fails because of a Microsoft update. Windows users will blame Zone Alarm and not Microsoft.
It's a conspiracy I tell ya...!

*Removes his best tin foil hat but keeps it on standby*

Chances are this happened due to Microsoft's incompetence and lack of quality control or testing.

I agree. I don't see the commercial benefit to Microsoft from trashing 3rd party firewall software - they don't charge extra for the built-in Windows one do they? I would think that each users investment in additional Windows software is an important factor in keeping people committed to their platform, so I'd call plain old incompetence on this one!

This is why you should not automatically install any updates before testing them. In an environment with multiple computers you should be using WUS anyway.

I don't think it's an attack on 3rd party software (let's not resort to conspiracy theories) because changing the security level from High to Medium brings you back online. In addition, this patch doesn't appear to be affecting any other programs.

Keep in mind that there is a LOT of 3rd party security software, each with their own ways of handling and monitoring connections. I'm sure a fix will be released soon.

Another good reason to keep away from them.

the above link is about this problem and i like the last paragraph saying that you would think the microsoft would test there update on the most common firewall software that people use first.

zonealarm has now recently a new version which fixes the conflicts caused by microsoft

It isn't just Zone Alarm that had a problem, if you run Windows XP and use either Look n Stop or PC Tools Plus firewalls you will also have problems with this update. I believe it also affects Agnitum Outpost. Nice.

Wilders Security Forums has a solution for Look n Stop which should also work for PC Tools - you can find it here - http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=214468

After BoycottNovell.com claiming that the update deletes Firefox 3, I've had enough tinfoil-hattage for today. I think it was just a mistake, as everybody at Microsoft would use Windows Firewall and not any third party firewall utilities.
