View Full Version : Good Bittorrent clients for OSX ?

Looking around the net, it would seem that there aren't as many good choices for a torrent client on OS X, compared to Linux or Win. Or is it that I just haven't looked hard enough ? I expected there to be an abundance of them, but have only seen fair to poor reviews of those which do exist. Utorrent still isnt' available, Azerus seems to be bloaty, and several others are said to be banned from a lot of trackers for reasons I'm not aware of.

So what are you guys using, which isn't paid for, caps bandwidth and just works well without being bloated ?

My favorite client for OS X is Transmission. Is that one of the banned clients you referred to? If it isn't, then I suggest giving it a try.

I've never been banned for using Transmission.

No, it's not banned. Unfortunately though it hangs even with a force quit upon shut down for me. Happened 4 times to the point where I had to do a hard reboot, which I don't like to do. Seems like a shoddy deal. What a shame. I'm stunned to see that with all of the fanboi-ism which revolves around Apple/Mac software, how little is available in the way of a good, stable torrent client. Don't the devs of these "banned" apps know what's going on with their own wares, and want to fix it ? Makes no sense to me.

That's strange, as I have had no issues with Transmission on OS X. Have you searched any support sources for the issues you're having? It's certainly not normal.

Unfortunately, Transmission is the only one I can recommend that fits the requirement of being "good" and "stable."

Because if I wanted to jump through hoops in order to install it, I'd rather just be on Linux ? :) I don't know OSX and am not about to start messing with config files and such, not knowing what is going where, and how I'd go about cleaning it all up should something go wrong or just in general. I'm keeping my OS X install as clean and simple until I understand it better.

Yup yup. Been using it now. Good dl speeds for me, but still have to wait a year and a day for it to shut down, which seems abnormal IMO. Tried Tomato, but it stinks. Way slow and kind of confusing with how it handles opening files and such.

I use an older version of Azureus on my G4. It's a bit slow, but I get better speeds out of it than with Transmission right now.

Transmission occassionaly (rarely) holds up shutdown for me on Leopard. Never on Arch running on the same machine & on my second machine.

Transmission is updated incredibly often, I don't think the shutdown problem will last much longer, even so it is a minor problem imho.

Due to the incredible amount of updating that the Transmission team do, Transmission under Leopard never holds up shut down now on my Leopard machine.

Apart from that they are making improvements to the interface; it is a little different, but so simple to set up as opposed to how Azureus was the last time I looked.

I use Transmission on whatever distro' I'm using also. It just works.

Another vote for Transmission. Simple, elegant, efficient.
