Hello,

I guess this is not really an ubuntu related problem but this is the only place I could think of posting my question.

Basically, I have some jpg images, which I want to convert to bmp gray scale files so that I can use a text reader to examine the resulting file and extract the data value (say 0-255) for each pixel.

I did manage this about 8 years ago but have completely forgotten how I did it. I have tried both imagemagick and gimp to convert to gray scale bmp format, but gedit cannot read the file at all, and nano shows that the file is encoded or something.

Does anybody have any ideas?

Thanks
