Hello everyone,

I bought a GeForce FX 5500 256MB PCI card yesterday (0x0326), but I just can't get it to work right.

I spent a few hours messing with xorg.conf and got all the devices, monitors, and screens to match, and X now starts up alright, but I am still pretty sure it's using the wrong driver. The max resolution I can use is 800x600.

I spent several hours searching the archives here, but have not found the solution to my problem. After I got xorg.conf to work, my problem seems to be getting the driver to work, unless I have to specifically specify which features or options to enable in xorg.conf.

Here is how my xorg.conf looks now:

# xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

- lspci lists my card.
- After manually configuring xorg.conf, X now runs at 800x600, although I do not know how many colors are displayed.
- When ran from bash, X echoed to the shell that 3 modules are already loaded or something, I can't remember because I restarted after I read it.
- The card is listed as being in the correct PCI slot

To me, everything seems alright, except the driver.

I went to the envy page, but couldn't dpkg the deb file of it.

So what all other information do you guys need? I tried to include any relevant information.

Thanks a lot guys.

Ok I got envy to run, and after it restarted, absolutely nothing has changed as far as I can tell. I hope it didn't harm my computer >.>

Could someone post their xorg.conf file after getting this card to work?

Thanks.

Well I may have gotten it to work. I forgot to check restricted drivers after I ran envy. I did, and selected proprietary drivers. Restarted. Now the display is shown at full 1680 x 1050.

But how do I know if ubuntu is using the card to its maximum potential and has all the features turned on?

Thanks.
