Hi,

I have two videos, one which plays fine using vlc and the other does not. The former is enabled for region codes 1-6 and the latter is only for 1, but this shouldn't be an issue since I'm in region 1 and assume my computer is too (I downloaded hardy from a US mirror).

When I open the second video, I get the following:

matt@Ogodei:~$ vlc

I do see the video's menu, but when I try to select "play the movie" from this menu, I get the following:

libdvdread: Can't seek to block 2087730
libdvdread: Invalid IFO for title 4 (VTS_04_0.IFO).
libdvdnav: ifoOpenVTSI failed - CRASHING!!!
vlc: vm.c:198: ifoOpenNewVTSI: Assertion `0' failed.
Aborted

The video plays fine on a mac, but does not play with mplayer, ogle, gxine or totem. I believe I have all the necessary codecs installed, but could be wrong (e.g. I have the gsteamer ugly set installed). Any help is greatly appreciated.

first you may want to add medibuntu to sources and upgrade libdvdcss2 to 1.2.9 (try below first)
I don't remember but that movie may need a patched libdvdnav to play, instructions here for vlc
having a problem with link give me a moment

Here's the thread on that title, installing libdvdnav-ifo4 should take care of playback with vlc. (don't uninstall current libdvdnav4)
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=685604&highlight=king+kong
If you installed it correctly as in link from my first post, when you run vlc from the terminal it will show this line,

VLC media player 0.8.6e Janus
libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 0.1.10 from http://dvd.sf.net
libdvdread patched to play DVDs with DVD-Movie-Protect <-
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.9 for DVD access

It also wouldn't hurt to go to your home dir., open .dvdcss and delete the folder for king of kong before trying vlc.
The other patch mentioned is for mplayer, you have to patch dvdread in the source and then build. Very easy to do, and is the preferred way to install mplayer in general. (let me know)

Thanks again. I thought I'd pass some new info along. I was unable to retrieve the libdvdnav-ifo4 patch, but the site from which it came provided an update which can be found here:

http://tobias.rautenkranz.ch/libdvdread_ifo.html (http://tobias.rautenkranz.ch/libdvdread_ifo.html)

following the instructions under Linux i386 worked fine for me. If I'm not mistaken, this won't work on 64-bit systems.

Using the preload works fine though I'm surprised you couldn't add the repo and install the .dep. Here's the page on that in case you want to try again.
http://tobias.rautenkranz.ch/debian/

edit; just did the repo method for someone, worked fine.
Maybe try adding sources first, and before reloading (updating) running the key line in a terminal. Then reload the sources and run the install of libdvdnav-ifo4 from the terminal.

I had installed the dvd playback functionality in Jaunty per the instructions at ubuntuguide.org and still couldn't play a particular DVD movie.

When I used VLC or Mediaplayer to play the movie, the picture was scrambled and the application would then crash.

What fixed it for me was to cd into ~/.dvdcss and then remove the directory with the DVD movie name(contains a bunch of cryptically named files in it). After that, the DVD movie played fine.
