Sorry if you know this but just in case;

The driver provided in ubuntu by default for AMD (ATI) cards is open source, which is good, but it provides no acceleration, which is bad. For acceleration you'll need the proprietary driver, which can easily be installed via the "Hardware Drivers" tool on the Administration menu. Alternatively, you can try Envy (http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html) which is a little less straightforward, but is still very easy.

I'm assuming it will work since my laptop uses an x600 card and it works for that - yours can't be that much different right?

EDIT: feel free to call me a patronising time waster ^^ but there's a chance it'll help

You can speak however you want but if this helps I'll be calling you a hero

hmm I'll try this envy since the default one isn't working

I installed that envy and it didn't work at all.........

so I went back to using the proprietary driver, which omg It worked I got the full hardware acceleration and all!!!!!!!!!!!

but I lost my monitor resolution so I ran sudo displayconfig-gtk to get it working, and now I've lost the hardware accelleration again :-( this is getting frustrating :-(

yet another try. Though I'm thinking of formating and setting up a duel partitiion with open susse since that for sure does support

does anyone know how I can resize the current partition without losing the ubuntu install?

here's my xorg file

# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)

# You should use dexconf or another such tool for creating a "real" xorg.conf
