View Full Version : Solved problems sub-forum?

In the short time I've been on the site, I've been really impressed with the volume of traffic and in particular the number of quck, helpful replies.
If this has a downside, though, it's this - threads disappear really quickly from the front page and can get overlooked easily. Would it be an idea to make a Solved Threads sub-forum to the main help forums. The idea is that once the thread opener is satisified with the response, he/she edits the thread title, adding {SOLVED} and a moderator then moves this thread to the Solved forum. In this way, threads might not appear and disappear so fast and it could help users with searches for solutions to their problems, by allowing them to search first in the archive of solved issues.

I think what you're looking for is the wiki. When a problem is solved, users are encouraged to write a guide for it in the wiki.

Yes, but you're still able to find them using the search field of the forum.
However it could be a good idea, but it would be a really hard work for mods to move all the threads one by one, and users will never be allowed to move their threads by themselves, i think.

True, unless there's a way to automatically move threads based on their titles it could be a lot of hassle for moderators.

A practical remedy is to add the keyword "solved" to your searches when looking to see if someone has already documented how they solved a problem. Plus it might be a good idea to enable thread title editing and encourage people to append the word "solved" to titles of threads with solved problems. I've always thought forums should have post categories like wikis do, like problem, bug, solved, etc.

I ran this idea by the other forum staff, and they thought it was a good idea... in theory. However, it does take quite a bit of work, too. If you do a forum search for the word solved (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/search.php?searchid=2346734), you'll see quite a few threads come up in that search--most of them are ones where I've modified the subject title.

People (the original post-ers and the moderators only) are free to modify the subject heading in accordance with this idea. People have to actually do it, though.

I am currently working on a system that the user who starts a thread or a moderator can check a thread as resolved and it will show in the thread topic. I currently don't have an eta as i got alot going on atm..

Nice one :)
If it's any help, I know a vBulletin site that has a thread-tools option for marking a thread as resolved. They might be willing to share the code.

even a solved checkmark that the op, or an admin can click when the problem gets solved.

I have seen a lot of users including my self start to edit the subject to "old subject <(solved)>" when they solve a problem so I think people would do this.

Edit: oops dident read above, but is is a very good idea.
