What exactly happens when you try to start compiz?
do you have CCSM (compizconfig settings manager)?
try pressing alt + F2, and typing:
compiz --replace
that should start compiz.

It in the "advanced desktop effects setting", under the "animations" button.
In "close effect" tab (or something like that), pick "burn".

you need to install the compiz config settings manager (CCSM)
search for it in synaptic
(System-Preferences-Synaptic Package Manager)
that will make the menu entry for System-Preferences-Advanced Desktop Effects
