I am new to ubuntu I have used this tutorial to encrypt my operating system

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Encrypted-Ubuntu-8-04-85271.shtml

Does this tutorial use full disk encryption and if it does when I am using ubuntu does it decrypt on the fly?

Thank you

Dan

it does full disk encryption (but makes use of LVM)... and it does unlock it on the fly... if you don't want to use LVM I made a little howto how to manually setup encrypted partitions.

define "manually" and did you try to find a howto yourself?

Using a solution such as True Crypt could provide you with more features and options.
The new 5.0 definitely has been improved and I think it's pretty stable.
Of course, it's all about how secure you want your data to be.

well, it seems the upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04 has problems with lvm.. a fresh install should be flawless...
