This is yet another extension of the original MPlayer PRE (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=78037) compilation guide. I'm separating the CVS compilation method because it's getting buried in all of the pages of the first thread. Props to everyone on the first thread (specially seethru and emendelson).

Fasten your seatbelts..

You need a proper sources.list file. Here is mine:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy-updates main restricted
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy-updates main restricted

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy main universe multiverse restricted
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy main universe multiverse restricted

deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy-security main restricted
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy-security main restricted

deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy-security universe
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy-security universe

sudo apt-get install build-essential debhelper libx11-dev libxv-dev libpng12-0 libpng12-dev checkinstall libavcodec-dev aalib1 libaa1-dev libaa1 caca-utils libcaca-dev libavcodec-dev libavifile-0.7-dev libsdl1.2debian-all libsdl1.2debian libsdl1.2-dev libesd0-dev libfaac-dev libfaad2-dev libgtk2.0-dev liblame-dev libice-dev libjpeg62-dev libmatroska-dev libmad0-dev libmpcdec-dev libmp4v2-dev libmikmod2-dev libogg-dev libtheora-dev libvorbis-dev libxinerama-dev libxv-dev xlibs-dev x-dev cvs libquicktime1 libquicktime-dev libmjpegtools0 fakeroot gnome-core-devel libpostproc-dev

If you have never used cvs before, do the following command:
touch $HOME/.cvspass

Downloading MPlayer CVS

Issue the following commands to get the latest sources:

cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@mplayerhq.hu:/cvsroot/mplayer login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@mplayerhq.hu:/cvsroot/mplayer co -P main

When asked for a password, just hit enter. A directory named main will be created. You can later update your sources by saying

cvs -z3 update -dPA

from within that directory.

FFmpeg libavcodec/libavutil/libavformat

CVS MPlayer is not fully functional without a copy of the libavcodec, libavformat and libavutil libraries from FFmpeg. Get FFmpeg CVS via

cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@mplayerhq.hu:/cvsroot/ffmpeg login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@mplayerhq.hu:/cvsroot/ffmpeg co -P ffmpeg

When asked for a password, just hit enter. A directory named ffmpeg will be created. Copy the libavcodec, libavformat and libavutil subdirectories into the main directory just created from the MPlayer checkout.
cp ffmpeg/libav* main/ -rf

In order to include libavcodec and libavutil in CVS updates, add the following lines to main/CVS/Entries:

gedit main/CVS/Entries

D/libavcodec////
D/libavformat////
D/libavutil////

Previously win32 codecs were placed in /usr/lib/win32. Applications like Xine use that directory for the same purpose. If you would like you can either keep both directories or make one linked to the other. If both directories exist you cannot link them.
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/win32 /usr/local/lib/codecs This is optional.

Compiling MPlayer
Most users will find the default configuration options adequate. However I recommend the following options. The first option is required to install the GUI. The second option is to allow access to large files over 2GB. Useful to rip DVD's or record Digital Video. The third option is for menus in the OSD (On Screen Display).
cd main
./configure --enable-gui --enable-largefiles --enable-menu --prefix=/usr --confdir=/etc/mplayer
If some errors pops up it is most likely due to a missing dependency (hey, I tried to include them all). Once it finishes, you should be able to see what you have enabled (ie what you compiled) and you do not. This step is great to see how your compile is piling up.
make
sudo make install

Making your own MPlayer debian package (after it works)
fakeroot debian/rules binary

A summary how-to for getting this contribution to work the first time.

1. Install the deb package, but don't run the program.

2. Go to a terminal, and run

sudo mkdir /usr/local/share/mplayer
sudo mkdir /usr/share/mplayer/Skin

3. go to

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design7/dload.html

and download a skin (Blue is the official default); in a sudo terminal, extract the directory from the archive, and copy it to /usr/share/mplayer/Skin ; rename the extracted directory from "Blue" (or whatever) to "default" (cd to the Skindirectory and then try: sudo mv Blue default)

4. Assuming that you've downloaded the Microsoft core fonts (by installing msttcorefonts), do this:

sudo ln -s /var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType/Arial.ttf /usr/local/share/mplayer/subfont.ttf

NOW, start gmplayer. You can import more skins to ~/.mplayer/Skin in the same way as in step 3.

Smooth playback

The defaults of MPlayer's A-V sync parameters aren't fine-tuned for perfect files. When looking at timing in such detail, you should take care of video timers, too. Be sure that the hardware RTC timer is used (MPlayer will complain to the standard output if the RTC timer has a value lower than 1024, start mplayer from a terminal window and examine the error messages).

First make sure the kernel rtc module is loaded in your kernel permanently:

sudo gedit /etc/modules
Add

rtc
at the end of the list. Now set up the rtc timer value at booting up time:

sudo gedit /etc/sysctl.conf
Add the following

dev.rtc.max-user-freq=1024
and save the file. For faster loading times, you will need to include the rtc module in your initrd image. Add it to your mkinitramfs configuration file:

sudo gedit /etc/mkinitramfs/modules
Add the following to the list:

rtc
and regenerate the initrd file of your running kernel:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-$(uname -r)
In case you have several kernels installed, you will have to specify their version explicitly.

If you want instant gratification, you can set up the rtc values of the running kernel before stating mplayer like this:

sudo modprobe rtc
sudo sysctl -w dev.rtc.max-user-freq=1024

Updating your CVS MPlayer
Go to your MPlayer main directory and
cvs -z3 update -dPA and repeat the compiling steps.

Using this method, some of us have created x86 compiled packages. Compiling it yourself is the best method, but for those who want a quick way out of this, here are some:

November 1st (2005) build (http://rapidshare.de/files/7068565/mplayer_1.0cvs_i386.deb.html)
October 31st (2005) build (http://rapidshare.de/files/7009051/mplayer_1.0cvs_i386.deb.html)

If someone compiles this using different architectures, please share the love :)

Thanks alot, I was having trouble playing some h.264, especially in Matroska mkv files. I tried the Ubuntu packaged mplayer and compiled from source tar. This method seams to have fixed everything.

(I'm a noob and all I did was follow the posted guide. I've tested it and it seems to work fine. Don't blame me if this warps your PC to the next dimension :P )

For some reason gmplayer isn't being built when I compile, I can't see anything obvious in the configuration log. I've followed the HowTo to the letter, but no matter what I do gmplayer isn't being created. Any ideas on what I could be missing? In the configuration.log is say it yes on the gui check, so I'm baffled.

Let me start by saying thanks for the great howto! Worked flawlessly up to the point where I try to set up the mplayer-plugin.
I'm using ff 1.5rc3 after following another great howto on the forums. The problem is that the mplayer-plugin doesn't show up in about:plugins.

I'm guessing that the .deb installs the plugin to the ubuntu firefox default plugin directory and I should try to move it to the directory where I've installed ff 1.5, right?

Another noobish question is how can I see what actually happens when I install a .deb? What files gets placed where and the like?

Still learning over here! ;)

It isn't supposed to do so. You just install the deb. Just go to /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/ and copy everything.

Another noobish question is how can I see what actually happens when I install a .deb? What files gets placed where and the like? That's not in the scope of this thread.

Now I've tried all of the .deb-files built from cvs and all of them generates the same error when I try to run gmplayer:

Linux RTC init error in ioctl (rtc_irqp_set 1024): Permission denied
Try adding "echo 1024 > /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq" to your system startup scripts.
[skin] file ( /usr/local/share/mplayer/Skin/default/skin ) not found.
Skin not found (default).

When I try to run it from Audio/Video in the Gnome menu I get the same complaint on the skin. I've checked and the skin seems to be where it should and everything :/

Anyone who knows what might be the trouble?

Have you untarred your skin? I think that is neccesary. What does /usr/share/mplayer/Skin and ~/.mplayer/Skin and /usr/local/share/mplayer/Skin hold?

Sadly I still have the problem with some .avi-files playing the video way faster than the audio, didn't have that problem in hoary :/

No I've made a clean install. I have the same problem in both of my computers but it's luckily only with a few files I have the problem. I've tried several builds of mplayer and both older and newer w32codecs. The result is always the same, the audio runs att normal speed but the video is like twice the speed. I've also tried to run the same files in VLC but it can only play the audio it seems. To be sure it wasn't the videofiles that had some weird kind of errors I tried to play them in WMP and there wasn't any sync problems :/

Nah sadly I don't know anything about video :/

When I checked one of the files properties I found this:

Video:
Dimensions: 320 X 240
Codec: Indeo Video 5 (win32)
Framerate: 25 frames per second
Bitrate: 0 kbps

Audio:
Bitrate: 1411 kbps
Codec: Linear PCM

Don't know whether it's useful information or not though :/

I'm using 5.10 freshly installed on a new computer. I've successfully compiled MPlayer from source (1.0pre7) on 5.10 before without a gui. All I did was get the binary codecs from Mplayer and untar them into the /usr/local/lib/codecs directory. After compiling, everything worked perfectly.

Now, I want to use MPlayer (still no gui) with JACK, and hence, I'm looking at the CVS option. Here is my question. The howto says to do the following:

sudo apt-get install build-essential debhelper libx11-dev libxv-dev libpng12-0 libpng12-dev checkinstall libavcodec-dev aalib1 libaa1-dev libaa1 caca-utils libcaca-dev libavcodec-dev libavifile-0.7-dev libsdl1.2debian-all libsdl1.2debian libsdl1.2-dev libesd0-dev libfaac-dev libfaad2-dev libgtk2.0-dev liblame-dev libice-dev libjpeg62-dev libmatroska-dev libmad0-dev libmpcdec-dev libmp4v2-dev libmikmod2-dev libogg-dev libtheora-dev libvorbis-dev libxinerama-dev libxv-dev xlibs-dev x-dev cvs libquicktime1 libquicktime-dev libmjpegtools0 fakeroot

I don't remember apt-getting any of those libraries when I compiled before. Is it the case that all of the above libraries and codecs are only necessary for a gui? I know I'll need build-essential (and debhelper?). Shouldn't I be fine just using the "all" codec package from MPlayerhq.com with the CVS version (with the FFMpeg parts copied into the main directory) and a ./configure; make; make install, if I'm not concerned with a GUI or making a .deb?

Just trying to get it all right before I break everything and start over again!;)

PS - I already have JACK up and running.
PPS - Thanks for this great discussion everyone!

Available codecs:
copy - frame copy, without re-encoding. Doesn't work with filters.
frameno - special audio-only file for 3-pass encoding, see DOCS.
raw - uncompressed video. Use fourcc option to set format explicitly.
nuv - nuppel video
lavc - libavcodec codecs - best quality!
vfw - VfW DLLs, currently only AVID is supported.
qtvideo - QuickTime DLLs, currently only SVQ1/3 are supported.
libdv - DV encoding with libdv v0.9.5

xvid should be listed above but it is not. Any help? Thanks!

Thanks for the great howto. However it took me some time to enable support for most codecs, I do not really know for sure if I really need them, but the fact that I knew them by name was enaugh for me to want them enabled.

So, it seems that for xvid support, you need libxvidcore4-dev to have installed (possible via synapticsudo apt-get install libxvidcore4-dev). Maybe this package should be included in the first post?

For x264, you (at least I did) have to visit http://developers.videolan.org/x264.html, download the daily tarball, (there is no stable release yet and the site seems to be a little overloaded) untar it, compile (I needed nasm sudo apt-get install nasm for succesful compilation) and add this option: --with-x264libdir=<whereever you compiled the codec> to you configuration. Do not forget to copy the compiled codec to the directory where you store other codecs.

After following this how-to my mplayer works great and it looks nice too. Thanks bored2k.

Small note: adding dev.rtc.max-user-freq=1024 to /etc/sysctl.conf didn't work for me until I did
sudo modprobe rtc
You have to add rtc to the end of /etc/modules

Does anyone have a .deb pacakge with XVMC enabled?

I need that package for MPEG2 decoding.

Now that I have come all the way and got the Unichrome DRM (kernel recompiled and everything) to work I am afraid that I will do something to break mplayer and end up without video on my MythTV box.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I followed this HOWTO a couple of months ago and it worked fine. However, today I decided to update it. Update was fine, but now I've got the following error when try 'gmplayer':
This codecs.conf is too old and incompatible with this MPlayer release! at line 6
[skin] file ( /usr/share/mplayer/Skin/default/skin ) not found.
Skin not found (default).

I have no idea about codecs.conf. Regarding the second problem, I've got my skin in /usr/local/share/mplayer, while it looks in /usr/share/mplayer I wonder why in the HOWTO prefix is /usr but skins are in /usr/local?

borked2k please make the following corrections in your howto:
1) Please replace
sudo mkdir /usr/local/share/mplayer
sudo mkdir /usr/local/share/mplayer/Skin/
with
sudo mkdir /usr/share/mplayer
sudo mkdir /usr/share/mplayer/Skin/

2) Please replace
copy it to /usr/local/share/mplayer/Skin/
with copy it to /usr/share/mplayer/Skin/

3) Please replace
sudo ln -s /var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType/Arial.ttf /usr/local/share/mplayer/subfont.ttf

with
sudo ln -s /var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType/Arial.ttf /usr/share/mplayer/subfont.ttf

Nice Howto by the way :)

Hi all!

I've cheated a bit and installed a pre-compiled .deb package of mplayer.

Now, when I try to start mplayer I'll get this error message:

mplayer: error while loading shared libraries: libdivxdecore.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Okey, so I'll have to install DivX codec package (divx4linux) then.
But where???
The www.divx.com/divx/linux (http://www.divx.com/divx/linux) link is broken and nothing can be found in the package manager.

Help please!

Hi there! I've gotten farther than ever on this howto tonight, but when running make, I get this error:cc: libavcodec/libpostproc/libpostproc.a: No such file or directory
make: *** [mplayer] Error 1

I looked in that directory, and that file doesn't exist just like it says. What can I do?

I copied the libavcodec directory into the main directory and it's contents are as follows:

fealos@DeepThought:~/ffmpeg/libavcodec/libpostproc$ ls
CVS mangle.h postprocess.c postprocess_internal.h
Makefile postprocess_altivec_template.c postprocess.h postprocess_template.c

That's also the contents of ~/main/libavcodec/libpostproc

EDIT: I just re-updated that directory with cvs and I still do not have that file.

I checked on the Mplayer site and the links for the cvs downloads are still the same as in your guide.

works for me just fine ( Ubuntu 5.10, Sony Vaio Notebook ). Only Mplayer expects "/usr/share/mplayer/" instead of "/usr/local/share/mplayer/" for the skin and font files.

You need the development packages:

sudo apt-get install gnome-core-devel

and be done with it :-)

Nice guide. It seems to work fine, except I got a font error when I started gmplayer even though I followed the guide and other users advices:

/usr/share/mplayer/subfont.ttf doesn't look like a font description, ignoring.
Cannot load font: /usr/share/mplayer/subfont.ttf

It seems like either I missed something essential, or the mplayer code has changed so it doesn't support ttf fonts any longer.

I had to download a font package from the mplayer site (Arial - Western), extract it and place some ".raw" fonts and "fonts.desc" in ~/.mplayer/fonts.

$ ls ~/.mplayer/fonts
font.desc iso-8859-1-b.raw osd-mplayer-b.raw
iso-8859-1-a.raw osd-mplayer-a.raw

I then had to open Preferences > Fonts and change the path to "~/.mplayer/font/font.desc"

After that subtitles worked fine. :)

Also, "sudo apt-get install gnome-core-devel libpostproc-dev" should be included in the guide.

Did that. Didn't help. What did help was updating the source using the following command in the source folder (main):
cvs -z3 update -dPA

The CVS version was probably wacked out when I downloaded it. IT's compiling great.

Hi,

I solved the problem, and apt is working fine.

I found a guide on
http://fink.sourceforge.net/faq/usage-fink.php
(Q5.19)

The issue with kept back packages seems to be not so important. Its just that the required libs are not in the stable repositories. At least thats what I was told in an other forum.

Hi,

I tried two plugins and both worked.

1) http://www.webfreetv.com/linux/
its just an .so file, you have to copy into your /firefox/plugins/ folder.

But I think this plugin is not so very good, as it doesnt show controls (you can control by the standard mplayer keys) and, if I used the "back" button of the browser before the video finished, it was still playing in the background (sound playing).

2) http://mplayerplug-in.sf.net/

I am using this one. But after installation it didnt work and in my /home directory a new user was created. Something with /home/ma* containing only one folder (mplyerplug-in) with .so and other files (I dont remember the other file ending and I can not check now). What you have to do is: copy all .so files into the /firefox/plugin folder, and all other files into /firefox/extension.

This works for me with .mov, .avi and .wmv. Didnt try .rm yet, but should work. You can also switch to fullscreen mode. I really recommend that.

also the playback stopps when using "back" button

All other plugins can be found under http://mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design7/projects.html (http://mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design7/projects.html)-> Browser plugins

Hi bored2k,

I redid the whole process today on another box running dapper. It occurred to me, that the line

needs some attention. For whatever reason apt-get decided it would rather use libquicktime0 over libquicktime1, no problem, I "apt-got" libquicktime0 and proceeded. Everything went fine until...

Mplayer GUI wouldn't run and refused to tell me why, just a small messagebox shouted ERROR and disappeared.

So I went through all of it again, until suddenly it dawned on me that apt-get just breaks off after the first mishap.

So I re-issued the above command with libquicktime1 to libquicktime0 and it worked.

I bet there are more uninitiated people like me out there who will be grateful for a remark of caution here.

Sorry, bored2k,

my comment was NOT on Dapper at all, but rather on the possible results of putting all packages in one line. Breezy will ask for the newer version just as well, as other packages will change also.

I forgot, that in the Linux World it's more important to categorize a thought correctly, than just make a helpful comment to help people avoid a trapdoor.

Hi,

maybe it has been stated somewhere.

I followed the how-to and mplayer works nice. But gmplayer tells me I didnt compile with gui.

The point is maybe that I have Kubuntu (KDE) and I can not install gnome-core-devel...

What package ,available for KDE, can be used instead? Would be very nice to have gmplayer.

I don't think it's possible to compile mplayer gui with KDE-stuff. However I don't understand the reason why you wouldn't be able to install gnome-core and gnome-core-devel?

Well, anyway, KDEs corresponding package to gnome-core is kdebase, making the corresponding one the gnome-core-devel the one named kdebase-dev. I'm not sure, but you might also need kdelibs with it's dev-package.
Allthough I'm rather confident it won't work without the gnome-core-package, this would be your best shot if you want to try it with KDE ones.

Would be very nice to have gmplayer.

Why not try Kmplayer? Lots of people here run it, and are happy with it. Just search the forums, I know there are a couple howtos about it here.

hmmm... could install gnome-core-devel...

I dont know if I was a complete blind dumb*** before or if anything miraculously changed in my system? mplayer and gmplayer works now fine, BUT:

when I start gmplayer from console, he complains:

xscreensaver_disable: Could not find XScreenSaver window.
/usr/local/share/mplayer/subfont.ttf doesn't look like a font description, ignoring.
Cannot load font: /usr/local/share/mplayer/subfont.ttf

About the font: I downloaded msttcorefonts, I created the link as in the how-to, and the font and the link exist (checked with filebrowser)
But: In the player I tried a DVD and subtitles are working

About xscreensaver: checked that option in the configuration dialog. Screensaver is active during playback. How can you fix this?

Thanks until now for all help and my mplayer is a godess!

Use the one which bored2k suggests at the end of the howto instead.

Also in the following quote is an example of what code to use to install it after you download it. issue the command while inside the directory where you downloaded the file. :D

Mozilla MPlayer plugin 3.11 (http://www.ahacic.5gigs.com/ubuntu/mplayerplug-in_3.11-1_i386.deb)

Hi bored2k.

I just compiled mplayerplugin 3.21. I recently compiled an updated mplayer from your howto and noticed a lot of people posting deb's for mplayer but not for the plugin. I compiled the pluging using firefox-dev that's in the main repo's.

Plugin link at bottom of post.

Edit: I have attached an tar.gz file containing mplayerplugin 3.21. This is not an deb package and was compiled for my computer so may not and probably will not work for you. I am doing alot of guessing here. You will need to extract the files "*.so and *.xpt to /home/username/.mozilla/plugins". Then put the mplayerplug-in.conf and the mplayerplug-in.types in "/home/username/.mozilla".

I have compiled mplayer succsfully before using this guide.
Today i did it on another pc, it compiled fine but when i tried to run gmplayer
the gui came up but with an error.
MPlayer interrupted by signal 11 in module: unknown
- MPlayer crashed by bad usage of CPU/FPU/RAM.
Recompile MPlayer with --enable-debug and make a 'gdb' backtrace and
disassembly. Details in DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports_what.html#bugreports_crash.
- MPlayer crashed. This shouldn't happen.
It can be a bug in the MPlayer code _or_ in your drivers _or_ in your
gcc version. If you think it's MPlayer's fault, please read
DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports.html and follow the instructions there. We can't and
won't help unless you provide this information when reporting a possible bug.

I discovered that when i run it as root there was no problem, i checked permissions on the mplayer files but that seems to be ok.

Any suggestions?

In the original post it is quoted that you have to install mplayer skins in /usr/local/share/mplayer/Skin.

In the original post it also mentions that the prefix used to configure mplayer is /usr.

When I followed the instructions mplayer crashed becuse it could not find the default skin. So if you install mplayer in /usr, then the skins are installed in /usr/share/mplayer/Skin.

Just to correct a minor error in an otherwise excellent HOW-TO.

Edit: It only happens with files that don't have subtitles.Solved! Open up your favorite text editor and leaving it completely blank, don't put any thing in the text file. Now save the file as default.sub and save to /home/username/.mplayer.

Remember to leave the file blank. It's just a blank text file acting as a place holder. Hope this helps.

I went to compile mplayer from CVS today, and ran into this error, as well. I've been successfully compiling mplayer from the CVS weekly or more for a few months now, both in Breezy and Dapper, and haven't ever seen this before. :)

If it helps at all, here's my configure output. I use the flags --enable-largefiles --enable-gui --enable-menu. It compiles fine without --enable-gui, and compiles fine from the official release source, but not from CVS.

**edit**

So, trying to get it to work this morning, I deleted all my old source and downloaded it fresh, and it compiled just fine. Go figure...

To get rid of this, I copied the arial.ttf to /home/lasse/.mplayer

Is this a solution, or am I just fooling myself and mplayer??
