Unable to boot/install from ubunto CD

When booting from the ubuntu CD the process begins but stops at a black screen with the message that states in part: tty not available, job controller not active/ unavailable.

This is a Win XP Pro, 32 bit and I want to do dual boot. A liveCD boot would be fine just to get started.

Instead of booting into the Live CD, go down the menu to 'check disk for errors'.
