I have tried installing and using the live versions, but when I tried that I had a problem with it not recognizing my dsl connection. I don't currently have a router connected between the modem and me. Back in July and June, I could install Ubuntu or Kubuntu and the connection would work. Back then I was doing like I am trying to do now, dual boot. To get windows to give up its IP, I would open the command prompt and type in 'ipconfig /release' and when I booted up into Linux it would connect. And to go back to windows 'ifconfig eth0 down'

Now however it is not working any way. If I try to boot into linux it doesn't establish the connection, and if I try that before I boot into windows, it won't let windows get a connection established until the modem renews the IP address. However if I load up into windows and restart windows all day and night, it establishes the connection every time.

I contacted my local ISP and they said that its not anything on their end, but something with Linux. I have even tried it with Fedora and it doesn't work.

Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated.

I have a simular problem which I haven't solved neither. For me I am connected to my dsl modem by a direct connection. Right out of the dsl modem to the tower.

I have installed Ubuntu 5.10 onto a clean hard-drive and my VisonNet ADSL 708 modem isn't working with it and the disk from my isp won't run the setup.exe or the autorun.inf to load it. I just can't get on the internet. I'm using the USB connection for this. I called Iowatelecom.net and they say i'm on my own here. Does anyone know what to do to fix this? thanks Lin

Try and avoid using USB DSL modems with linux...there is support, but it is patchy, and difficult to configure. I always recommend to people using an ethernet modem as linux will pick it up straight away as an external device.
