Because of hardware issues I am forced to use a dual operating system of Linux Dapper Drake/Windows XP Home. The latter came installed with my PC.
Microsoft will be discontinuing Windows XP. Will my operating system that came with my computer be faced with an 'end of life' date? My machine isn't fully compatible with Linux or Vista. Or will, after the 'end of life' date, will the free software community keep my components working?

If you're referring to the June 30, 2008 deadline, if I remember correctly, that referring to SALES of XP, not support. Full support continues until Windows 7 comes, then limited support until like 2014. So you're still good for now :)

I second this statement.
The reason why they are doing this is because they know vista was a flop and needed to find a way to solve the flop problem.

Besides which, even after 2014, it's not like XP won't work anymore. New installs may require cracked serials, but existing installs will still function. I mean, some people still use Windows 95.

If memory serves, after fresh install of WinXP Home, doesn't SP2 (pending updates) install bring it to a near Professional status? It removes the home logo from start-up splash, adds the security center, & it may add back remote desktop... Now that SP2 is gone, the update should prompt you to install SP3 so God only knows what good can come of that...

Luckily, SP2 can still be found if you know where to look, I put it on my grandma's computer recently. It's still hosted on M$'s servers, there's even still a page for it, it's just not linked to anymore. Google Windows XP SP2 and you'll find it.

trust me SP3 is EVIL pure f'ing EVIL.
I put it on my xp pro sp2 partition and when it rebooted nothing worked,i had three errors at start, and after all that I think it deleted part of my hard drive space.
So I just restored to sp2.
My mom tried it on her custom built computer, and she kept trying and trying(cause she is a Microsoft fan and doesn't like OSS)
finally I told my story and she was like uhhh ok how do I fix it?
I told her to use sp2 and not sp3 and she said sp3 is there for a reason,I tried to tell her why yet he insisted on installing it,so payed a tech to come out and install it :/.
I was in shock when she did that.
