I don't know if this a logical answer but have you looked at the software sources in system-administration-software sources and made sure that your cd reader is not still ticked on from a install by a cd.

the check box is not ticked.....what else could be a problem???

Alas, I too have noticed this problem on my dell 1525. The tray will just pop out for no reason. I also now have an issue with shutting down ubuntu after the recent update.
So for the record I've have 4 issues arise from the latest update of Hardy:
1. Wireless stopped working
2. DVD/RW tray pops open at times
3. Shut Down does a re-start instead of a shutdown
4. Movie player that came with ubuntu didn't play a DVD.
I suspect I may find more issues as I continue to dig. I am just wondering if there is a way to do a system rollback/recovery like in windows.
I've tried to boot from the earlier version, pre-update, but issues still remain.

Franc88 all you need is a GStreamer codec for running your DVD..
