hey there,

been messing around with the compiz advanced desktop effects settings and am amazed by what it can do.

i've set up 4 workspace slots, and have the rotating cube set up so switching between them works beautifully.

i've also set the desktop to be somewhat transparent so i can see the other three workspaces "inside my computer, woooo".

BUT, my icons are also acting under that transparency setting so they are considerably more dimmed than they should be.

I realise this is actually working as it should be -- however I'd quite like for the desktop to be transparent but for the icons to show up as normal.

Is there any way I can do this? I've attached a screenshot for reference.

One thing I can think of is setting your icons in the widget layer...
That's a pretty cool concept. I'm trying it out to see if it will work.

Ok. I couldn't find a way to set the icons in the widget layer. However, you can add screenlets and place them in the widget layer and they should not become transparent...
Check my screenshot. The X icon is a screenlet launcher and the trash can is also a screenlet and they don't become transparent.

hmm, so no way you think?

if push comes to shove, i can certainly live with the dimmed icons. bit of a shame though!

With the icons, I don't think so (or I don't know how to). Unless you can set them at a different layer than the desktop, they'll become transparent as well. The thing is, you can set the behavior for the windows (i.e., opacity, placement, etc) so I would be inclined to say that you can do the same for icons but it's probably not as straight forward... Hopefully someone with more development experience will pop in and help you on this. If I find anything I'll let you know. As I mentioned, this is a pretty cool concept!
