Hello people, I'm in the process of migrating from leopard to ubuntu. Some people call me nuts for leaving leopard but I'm a true believer of the GNU project. WiFi is a critical aspect for me so before installing a new distro, which one would you recommend me, Gutsy or Hardy. My laptop is a MacBook 4,1.

Regards,

Gus

Go with Hardy. However, I'd recommend a dualboot setup, that way you can have both OS X and Ubuntu :)
Check out the main guide at: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBook
You'll find all the details regarding wifi there. Also for a dualboot setup, the Macbook Pro guide offers a bit more info: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro

Hello _alex_, I wish I've heard your reply before. I erased leopard and installed ubuntu 8.04. Everything works except sound and wireless. I've tried every possible solution with no luck. A friend of mine told me that as of today, it is impossible to have sound and wifi working on a 3rd generation MacBook 4,1. Knowing that I have installed leopard again and I am planning to make a partition to install ubuntu as my secondary OS.

Would it be possible for a 3rd generation MacBook 4,1 to have sound and wifi under Ubuntu 7.10. Also I would appreciate any help on how to do the partition stuff.

Regards,

Guzzo

First a clarification, a MacBook4,1 would be a 4th generation machine, not a 3rd generation.

Second, sound and WiFi will work under hardy... It is not exactly working out-of-the-box, but it is certainly not "impossible".

Thanks a lot for the clarification. Is the link you send me only valid for Ubuntu 7.10 or can I use it for Ubuntu 8.04?

Also if WiFi is valid on either one, will it work with WPA2?

Thxs,
It should work in either version, yes.

WPA2 is touchy anyway, so I wouldn't make promises, espeicially since recently many people have been reporting issues with WPA. This are mostly affecting people with Atheros cards though, not the Broadcom ones. It should at least work with WPA.
