I bought some more memory to put into my new Ubuntu machine.

Is there anything special I need to know about the process -- with respect to the OS software?

I suppose it's like Windows, right?
Turn machine off.
Insert new memory.
Turn machine on.

And OS recognizes it and boots up automatically.
Yes?

I added some memory on an old rig running Xubuntu 7.10
Did exactly what you said. Worked like charm!

when you have more than 4gb ram then there is something you need to do or use a 64bit OS ;)

+1 :)

(Did this recently on an Acer - no problems - it just works.)
