View Full Version : [ubuntu] Brother HL5250DN lazer printer drivers for new printer

Hello again, I have a simple question or two. I just purchased a Brother HL5250DN duplexing lazer printer. I downloaded the Brother printer and cupps drivers. Do I need the Cups driver in 8.04? I'm hoping the kernel drivers are good and I won't need the Brother drivers. My luck they will be needed. Anyone have any experiences with this printer. Staples had them with a 70$ rebate till tomorrow so I caved. I have wanted one for a year now. Just never could catch a sale. I hope it goes well.

Go to Synaptic; search under Brother. The correct one for your printer is, IIRC, "laser". Install driver from Synaptic.

Thank you very much. Wolf I downloaded the file and saved it. I'll use it if Avtolle's suggestion of adding the drivers through Symantic doesn't work. I've done that and will put the printer on tomorrow ant try it. Thank you for the fast replies. I noted there was no auto detect for this printer as Wolfe's link showed. I did not figure the drivers would be there. I read they were only released in March or April. Wish me luck.

Good luck to you. From a "historical note", the additions to Synaptic of the Brother drivers occurred shortly after 8.04 was released, and not knowing the same were there, I installed a MFC-240C using the drivers, etc., from the Brother site. I have since installed the same printer on the same computer under LinuxMint5, using the correct driver from the repositories, and prints just fine. For anyone reading, if you have a MFC, you will still need to d/l the scanner and fax drivers from the Brother site.
