I haven't tried my video software since my upgrade to Hardy until now. I thought since I can view and hear videos in FireFox I'd be fine but it's not the case.

I'm trying to open an AVI video from downloaded from my digital camera. The video starts at a very slow speed but has no sound then freezes completely. The only software that I can view and hear the sound is Gwenview. More importantly, I can't run any of my video editing software.

Nothing has changed as far as hardware since was previously working on Ubuntu 7.10. I am up to date with the latest kernel (2.6.24.19-386).

Any help would greatly be appreciated!

Steve

With further research I found using the terminal may help and it did. Somehow my settings must've changed since the last time I used mplayer. Perhaps it was during the upgrade to Hardy, I don't know. Any, it solved! Here is what was return to me for anyone interested in the error messages I was returned (had to switch to Alsa sound):

**** Your system is too SLOW to play this! ****
************************************************

Possible reasons, problems, workarounds:
- Most common: broken/buggy _audio_ driver
- Try -ao sdl or use the OSS emulation of ALSA.
- Experiment with different values for -autosync, 30 is a good start.
- Slow video output
- Try a different -vo driver (-vo help for a list) or try -framedrop!
- Slow CPU
- Don't try to play a big DVD/DivX on a slow CPU! Try some of the lavdopts,
e.g. -vfm ffmpeg -lavdopts lowres=1:fast:skiploopfilter=all.
- Broken file
- Try various combinations of -nobps -ni -forceidx -mc 0.
- Slow media (NFS/SMB mounts, DVD, VCD etc)
- Try -cache 8192.
- Are you using -cache to play a non-interleaved AVI file?
- Try -nocache.
