I have just scanned my PC with Avast AV and found hundreds of Windows viruses which I understand will not affect Ubuntu. However what if I plug in a USB flash drive and then use it on a Windows PC , will the viruses then be transferred ?

Yes. If your PC has active virsus running, any and every file you download, create and copy will go along with it. Viruses, before the internet and dialup modems, originally spread on floppy disks shared among fiends and/or co-workers. a USB flash drive is no diffrent than a floppy disk... so to answer you question.. yes.

Thanks for that , wasn't sure if the way Ubuntu writes files would
work in Windows .
