dvd's won't play!

i have cd reader/writer and dvd reader combo drive

HL-DT-ST CDRW/DVD GCCH10N

and i think its faulty but im not sure. NOTHING will play dvd's. not even VLC. ive tried numerous things on my XP partition and not too many things on my ubuntu partition, but ive tried vlc on both. what could be wrong?

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras maybe perhaps?

well called dell, they did some stuffs, and figured out that they probs instaleld a faulty drive. new one comming in soon!
