The system installed is hardy 8.04 ,
recently I went for updates and installed most of them but after updates the "main menu" applet in gnome-panel is having some problems

1 : drop down menu is not showing icons besides its names
2 : the applet "quit" not working :-- whenever I click on System->quit or on the applet "quit.." it restarts Xserver and brings me to login screen , instead of giving me the pop-up menu of showing options of log-off , restart , shutdown.

does anyone knows the answer to these two problems especially the second one?

could this be an update error due to some wrong scripting the
version of gnome-applets I am using is

package : gnome-applets , gnome-applets-data
release : Hardy Heron 8.04
Version of Package : 2.22.2-0ubuntu2

will I need to reinstall my ubuntu to get this fix done or is there any way I can find the file and moderate it??

It will be great if I can get reply on what could be done next?
This could even be a bug and there are already two bugs describing it
