View Full Version : OpenSUSE and ATI: Better?

I'm thinking of switching to OpenSUSE, simply because I'm getting tired of screwing with graphics problems in Ubuntu. I have a widescreen monitor, so I need 1680x1050 resolution. I have an ASUS mobo with built-in ATI graphics, and I like it, but, for example, I seem to have the dreaded and unfixable issue with DVD playback where it plays really choppy. I think that is ridiculous. I mean, I know things like that happen, but it's ridiculous for me to have a computer that's pretty much BEGGING to play DVDs, that can't play DVDs. I don't imagine flash will be any better in OpenSUSE, but I can live with that so long as I can get something like Totem with it's youtube plugin.

Basically, are my graphics likely to work better in OpenSUSE? I'm talking the KDE version if that matters...

Thanks,
Dan

Your best bet is to download one of the live discs and give it a spin. openSUSE has very good hardware support, so chances are your card will work well. I have a graphics card that won't work properly with other distros, but openSUSE manages to configure it correctly right from the start.

I don't think it will work much better than in Ubuntu with 3D... but 2D acceleration should work out-of-the-box.

You should check this out when trying to configure your ATI card in openSUSE:

and this http://en.opensuse.org/Compiz_Fusion for Compiz Fusion.
