Ugh. Can't find a forum to post this... :-/
I got a Dell Inspiron 1501, and almost immediately wiped the drive, and installed Ubuntu 8.04, leaving 3 empty NTFS partitions at the end of the partition table for if I ever need to install XP again.

Now, the time has come. I CANNOT play Starcraft with a laggy mouse. Period.
So, I popped the installation cd into the drive, restarted the laptop, went to the one time boot menu, selected CD-Drive, and... Nothing.
The laptop froze after saying something like "Checking computer configuration..."

Any ideas?
(And I thought installing Linux on a laptop would be hard xD )

Idk, but maybe you should completely wipe your drive (back up /home and write down all your application names for later) and then install Xp and then reinstall Ubuntu.

A better solution would probably be to use virtualbox or vmware or something (idk which one is good)

Are you looking to recover XP? Have you looked into testdisk?(Google it):)

First off, are you sure it froze? "Checking Computer Configuration" is usually the first step after it boots the windows CD. This can take up to 10 mins, so I'd try again and give it a little more time.

Second, as was mentioned before, I would strongly suggest you install XP first and then Ubuntu. In my experience, this has always worked better, especially when you're configuring the boot loader.
