recording the computer screen

Whenever I watch an online tutorial for a program (Gimp, blender, etc.) its always a video of some guys computer screen as he messes around with the program and talks over it. How do I record whatever is going on in my computer screen like these guys do? (The only way I could do it now is by pointing a camera at my computer but that just looks bad)
