I'm looking for a voip service and interface for Ubuntu that is inexpensive and has an incoming phone number.
I read somewhere that ekiga doesn't have incoming phone number feature, is that correct?
Dose wingophone have incoming phone to pc calling?

I have it installed, have only been using it to text chat with one person, haven't yet tried the talking option, but read here some talk about problems with the volume control in Linux. Do you use it?

You can place test calls with skype where you can test the mic and speakers before committing any money if you're worried about it not working.

I use Skype, I have a rather broken Ubuntu system (atm my screen res is messed up), and use the phone service...works fine for me, Skype picks up my microphone fine, and I can call any phone in the US with the plan I have. I also have an option to get a number, or have my calls forwarded to my cell, I just never got around to activating that bit of the deal. I use a Macbook, so there were some issues with the sound, yes, but all I did was set my audio to pcm and make sure everything was turned up and on in the sound preferences. Video from the built in iSight works for me too. However much helpfull that is. :(

I was using voipdiscount.com with my Windows OS. They offer incoming phone number and free and low rate phone calls. Today I installed Ubuntu - fresh to Linux! and am wondering if anyone could tell me if they know if I have to use Ekiga Softphone as an interface for voipdiscount.com. Any and all info is greatly appreciated.
Regards from a MS free human and loving it!

I looked at their site and didn't see how I can sign up for a free incoming number. Can you please explain how it's done.
I too haven't yet got ekiga working with voipcheap.

There was this article in 2600 (last Spring) about how to get the cheapest phone service possible, both incoming and outgoing. I believe the author used Skype for all outgoing calls, you can get unlimited calls to the US and Canada for something like $30 a year. He said he couldn't figure out a way to get free outgoing calls. For incomming calls, he had a free solution, at www.freeworlddialup.com. They give you a six diget user code. Someone who wants to call you calls on of their numbers and then enters in your code. The call is then connected through to you.
$30 dollars a year for full phone service isn't that bad :-).

EDIT: Looks like the recommended download on FWD is only for Windows. The website says that "to get started quickly, you can download Pulver.Communicator or any number of free soft-phones," so you might have other options.

I'm not sure why your suggesting to use both skype and FWD. If I'm not mistaken Skype offers an incoming number on subscription.
Can't FWD be used on Ekiga?
And what about VOIPcheap? Aren't they offering free out going calls?

A quick look at VOIPcheap's websites reveals that your minutes per week for free calls has a cap of 300, only to be used on free days. Also, you only get free days if you are a trial user. You can get them as a regular user but you have to buy credit.
If you want everything to be streamlined and don't mind paying a bit extra for convenience, you can just put everything on Skype. The reason why I suggested both FWD and Skype was because, according to the author of the article I talked about, that is the cheapest way to get both incoming and outgoing calls. He actually built a phone setup for himself that he uses with both of services, and they both route to the same phone.
We're getting off topic though. I was describing what some people believe to be the cheapest method. Your simplest, safest, and still fairly cheap option is to use Skype.
