That being said, I'm working on one of my converts, and he makes music and wants to use his machine for a recording studio.

what is there available to him that he can download easily (free of course) that will (koff koff) actually show up in applications when he installs it?

Googled...
Linux based recording studio: http://www.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=04/10/20/1423245

Recomended...
I read this one a few weeks back and thought it was really good. I love Audacity, but that might not be enough, depending how pro your friend is.

I don't use any of them under Linux, my Linux box is more for programming and messing arround. I don't even have a mic for it yet. I've used Audacity for ~2 years on OSX though and it works great.

Thanks. He had me unintall ubuntu and put windows back in because we couldn't find anything. BUT he's still willing to go back, so I resurected an old machine and put it on the back side of my desk (one of those u shaped big room filling desks muahahah) so I can just turn around and get to it, and it's got Ubuntu on it so I can try this stuff out. If I get anything worth a flip, I can just page him to come to the Office, "Frank, come to the office RIGHT NOW", lol. Gotta love it.
