i want to login to the terminal with su privileges from GDM.
is this possible? thanks in advance

Sure it's possible, but if you need advice to do it, then you shouldn't be doing it.

Try Nautilus scripts. Get the Nautilus scripts package from gnome-look.org and copy them to ~/.gnome2/nautilus-scripts
EDIT: Sorry, I misread the OPs post.

Ok Fine.
Is their a way to login to just a normal full screen black and white command line from GDM.
I'd like to swap between gnome and the command line with GDM

Control-Alt-F1
Press Control-Alt-F7 to get back.

If you hit ctrl-alt-F1 it will switch to a virtual terminal, is that what you mean? Alt-F7 switches back to the graphical interface.
Most Linux distros have 6 VTs, accessible by using F1-F6.
