View Full Version : Use of cell phone as a bluetooth headset with Messenger

I hope I am posting this in the right section... so I have this laptop with an in-built microphone. The microphone is right on top of the screen, beside the web-cam. Now, I use it to make international calls, and I use Yahoo Messenger's Phone Out service. Most of the time I am ok with it, but sometimes I feel a bit awkward and have a tendency to lean toward the microphone (which means leaning over the laptop). Usually I also have to turn the laptop's volume up to 100% for it to be audible on both sides. Further, if I want to record my own voice the volume is always too low.

I have a USB Bluetooth adapter that works well with the laptop. I also have a bluetooth enabled cellphone. Now is it possible to make certain connections such that I speak into my cell phone, even though the call is made through Yahoo Messenger, and whatever the other party says I can hear it back in my cell phone? I know there's something like Voice Gateway on my software on Vista, but the interface is riddled with a dozen different dialogue boxes and also various audio devices available, and I got a little confused with the terminology (hands free audio, audio gateway, headset gateway, bla bla bla) and also whether I have to change the audio devices in Vista.

My USB Bluetooth adapter is TrendNet TBW-105UB (came with Widcomm Bluetooth software). My cell phone is Motorola V3M. My laptop is HP Pavilion dv6375us. I have Vista and Ubuntu on my laptop. Vista has some in-built Bluetooth software, but I am using the Widcomm one entirely. Ubuntu has a generic software that handles file transfer between the cell phone and the laptop so far, but there's no option for anything else.

Has anyone done something like this in either Ubuntu or Vista?

I suspect this is not possible, at least not practically, as the service would have to be built into the cell phone's OS, and I doubt many cell phone manufactures are making the headset function built in that way. There most likely setup to be the host for an earpiece.

A cellphone can be made to have a bluetooth headset connection. This means that if you manage to get this working, you may use the laptop's mic to make calls via the cellphone. I dont think the cellphone's software would support the cellphone mic to be used as a microphone over the bluetooth.

I suspected as much. I guess I would have to buy a bluetooth enabled headset then... I didn't want to give out $40 or so on that, but I guess the cellphone thing doesn't work.
