Hi all,
Do you people suggest me some of precautions which are to be taken when surfing net. I always get worried when a link is there, I do not open any as they can have virus affected or Spyware. I am looking for safe ways of surfing. Nowadays Internet as there is rise in internet usage so is the threats.
Thanks!

One possibility to keep in mind is that the Firefox browser shows the real link at the bottom of the screen - this can sometimes alert you to "sneaky" web pages.
EDIT:<not totally relevant to Ubuntu>The latest version of AVG for Windows also has an option for scanning links in certain circumstances and showing an icon that alerts you to possible problems </not totally relevant to Ubuntu>

install the noscript addon and maybe also Adblock Plus.... that should prevent for scripted attacks through your browser

As long as you use Ubuntu, you're protected from spyware/adware/viruses already. No need any of those ridiculous addons like noscript and adblock and whatnot.

not quite true... java is crossplattform so java malware could get installed through a browser... it will only affect the current user...
furthermore it could allow tracking of what pages the person visits...

Oh right. I forgot about that. Oh well. You could just leave Java not installed. =D

I like adblock but noscript gets in the way too much for me.

well, some stuff requires java... like all the tax programs here that are distributed to fill in your tax forms ;) good thing is, the java tools run on all system... bad thing is I still think java is slow ;)

Also, people tend not to like it when other people unwittingly pass on infected e-mails.
The virus might not effect your Ubuntu system, but it may just ruin your friends Windows install.

Yes you are absolutely right, your system is not safe when accessing net, some of basic precautions can make surfing safe and easy. I would suggest you to install a good Anti-Spyware, Anti-Virus and firewall other than this you can also download some Add-ons available. HHOT View (http://www.hhott.com/) is a Browser Add-on can be used with any of web browsers available. It is an innovative and patent-pending browser add-on to support safe, fast, and click less browsing of web pages and rich media content. You can download HHOTT Free Software from here (http://www.download25.com/publisher/hhott.html).
Wish you safe browsing!!
You dont need antispyware in Linux or realtime antivirus protection (unless you have a server of some kind) all you need is a good firewall (preferably a firewalled router). Firestarter is a good software based alternative, its in the repos. Don't expect it to be a trashy zonealarm antivirus "mash up" though.
Also WTH is that awful add on i mean who wants that except a 12 year old kid? What a load of trash!

Does that mean you gave it the thumbs down? And even without reading the system requirements in the FAQ.

I assumed it was some kind of FF addon as i only got as far as the description on the page and had to close it in disgust. It looks like the first steps in the war on net neutrality.
:lolflag:
Why the hell would he post that on this forum???

This so called add-on almost made me wet my pants. There are four things on that webpage and three of them are old, really old.
- Clickless browsing was originally introduced by the MultiZilla project in 2006.
- Save browsing was developed by Google in 2007 (even a default component of Firefox).
- Automatic updates was originally introduced by the MultiZilla project back in 2002.
- Free? Sure, but will never get a patent. That is for sure (prior art).

Wait a sec! Have you seen this "View photos" which brings me to:

She is certainly hot, but what has that got to do with this add-on?
/me I'm confused

I know?
What is the benefit in using it? It's hardly anything new, AOL have been doing these kind of user annoyances for years!
:lolflag:
I have seen the photo you linked now. I'm uninstalling Linux as we speak and installing vista so i can use this innovative browser plug in!!!
