Monitor Suggestions

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T61 with the integrated Intel X3100 with 8.04

I'm looking into purchasing a 24" monitor and was wondering what type of configuration I would have to endure.

If I plugged the monitor into the VGA port on the back would it automatically configure xorg and clone the screen at the correct resolution?

How easy or difficult is it to do this?

Is the Intel X3100 an okay card for a 24" monitor?

I've used gnulinux for a while now and external monitor support used to be tedious how much better is it now?

I have a Lenovo 3000 n200 with the same intel chipset. It will clone the screen, but I could not get my external monitor to use the right resolution. It's a 1280x1024 monitor, but it's stuck on 1280x800 (my laptop's resolution).
