Getting Ubuntu to recognize my camcorder

I have a sony DCR-TRV18 minidv camcorder that I would like to use as a webcam. the usb streaming option has been enabled and of course it works in windows xp, but I cant find any documentation on how to make it work for Ubuntu. Any help is appreciated and pls let me know if additional info is required.

ps..Im using the usb port because the firewire port on the cam is not working
