I recently switched from VMware Server to Virtual Box and I have to say I'm pretty much in LOVE with it. The thing I like the most about it is not having to run a python script to recompile kernel headers ever time a kernel update is issued.

But I'm willing to bet there are some technical advantages that stick out with VMware that Virtual Box doesn't feature. I don't know what they are/might be.

I'm wanting to write a blog that compares the two and review them. What are the pros and cons of each?

Slightly off topic: If you were to recommend a third contender besides these two, which would it be and why? I'd like to give an honorable mention to at least one or a few other programs in my review.

Well, I tested the two VMs about two years ago and found that VMware Server handles copy-cut-paste of text reliably between Linux and Windows XP, VBox didn't. And that the speed between OS shares was faster in VMware. Thus I've been using VMware ever since, and routinely run the config.pl as needed to work with upgrades. Hasn't been a show-stopper. <smile>

All else has been just great for me, being a graphic designer. Notice my signature.

VMWare supports more different guest OS's than Virtualbox. Virtualbox also doesn't do 64 bit guests yet.

Right now i'm on VMware, simply for the fact that Virtualbox does not work on my ubuntu partition. If it worked, I wouldn't hesitate to switch to virtualbox. Reason being that I've been having some control issues with VMware, making me log out each time I want to switch back to ubuntu.

Will add to the above advantages of VMware - setting up bridged network and accessing USB devices is a lot of work in VBox. I rather run vmware-config.pl which takes 1 minute.

Ummm, I guess there would be two camps here:
1) Virtual Box is easy as pie for the beginner.
A) Virtual box has a light resource foot print than VMware.
B) To my knowledge, Virtual Box offers seamless mode; it absolutely spoils you!
C) USB is a snap to configure and get working.
2) VM Player/Server is for a more seasoned Linux user.
A) VMware is solid. It seems to me it would be the KDE of virtual machines to Virtual Box's Gnome.
B) Don't know a counterpoint to this for VMware.
C) ???????? haven't really been able to configure and use it. Perhaps in another week or so of learning with Ubuntu. I will get there.
3) Perhaps a performance test?
4) I dont know this for sure but can VMware push Mac OS X? I know Virtual Box can't/doesn't support it.
