Does linux have anything similar? I've seen sprite/tile based material, but nothing like this using a 3d layout. Have I simply not looked hard enough, or are too many people focused on 'build it yourself' to help create a simple toolkit to allow people to string something together?

Why do I want something like this? I already have several worlds populated and fully fleashed out. I also have friends that I occasionally run games with, small scale really. Of course since I want people to do as they like within the world created rather than simply run campaigns that I/other GMs create. Nothing large scale, no wider ambitions than just to have a long term weekend project.

I wonder if it can be run in wine... tonight when I'm bored I think I'll try that out. I didn't find an entry in the app database, but just a thought.

There is something like this I think:

http://worldforge.org/

I'm not sure that its exactly what you want, and indeed, I can't even remember if it is what I'm thinking of. But you can use the software to make your own MMOs.

While searching I found a pretty neat application (it looks expensive lol) http://www.bigworldtech.com/technology/tools.php, I couldn't find "supported os" anywhere.

Found seemingly an upcoming open source one http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=191589

Just thought this also might be interesting to yous future MMO makers : )

There's the unigine (amazing game engine, but prices aren't for casual development), the torque engine, crystal space one, um.. spring for rts games mostly, jmonkeyengine

You should check out what are some of the open source mmo's using for their engine

Worldforge seems interesting. I'll have to take a look (though currently I'm using windows on a machine that isn't mine so it could be problematic).

Thanks for the links.

Taking a look at it myself, it might not be what you're looking for. All the material is open source, so you could do what you want, I'm just not sure about how complex it would be.

What reminded me of it was that the current game they are making with the software allows players to modify the world in game, buy building houses and such.

Reguardless. its something to kill bordom as despite the fact I'd LIKE to make the sci-fi themed setting as a graphical setup I've got several fantasy themed worlds I could transplant so all is well.

Not planning on making the next WoW, or even another planeshift. Just something to keep me busy, maybe have a few friends over.
