Hi!
I've got media control buttons on my laptop (volume +, volume -, play, stop, rewind etc.). All these buttons are not regular buttons, they are touchpad buttons, i.e. I don't press on them, I just touch them. Laptop is Hp dv9700t.
Sound controls used to work fine before, but now when I press them a little sound control window opens, like as if it was working fine, but the sound volume doesn't change. I've installed Ubuntu few days ago, I am a newbie, need help.

Thanks in advance!

Are you on Hardy? I also have a dv9700t and am running the 64-bit version. My volume control and mute work correctly in every context I've tried them, so far.

My media control buttons (i.e., play/pause/etc.) only work with Rhythmbox, which I can't explain but don't regard as a serious problem.

Yup, I am using Hardy.

My volume control buttons used to work ok too, but then after few days it got screwed up. :(

Hmm. Did you change anything in your sound prefs? Any system updates or package installs that might be connected to the problem? Sorry to grasp at straws.
