annoying problem where none of my 3 cdrom drives will read dvds. e.g ubuntu live cd. i get the title error message when trying to mount the drive with a cd in it. used to work before on previous installations!

quick update: the filesystem on the dvd is iso9660

You stated cdrom drive reading dvd. You do have a dvd drive?
Output this command from Terminal:
wodim -checkdrive

cdrom drives can't read anything else than cds. Get yourself a dvd drive, they can read both dvd and cd.
