Friend of mine and I are thinking about setting up our own e-mail and web server, just something to tinker with. We found some cheap colocation in the area and since I've been using ubuntu as a desktop for a while now, we were thinking about trying to use the server version for this little project. Only issue is hardware support. The section on supported servers seems to be short (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportMachinesServers). We've found some cheap IBM x335 eServers and were thinking about buying one. Since this isn't on the list of supported hardware, is there any way to determine if it'll work out (other than buying it and finding out)?

Thanks for any help.

It should work fine. I have three x335 servers running in our server room right now. Just loaded 8.04 server edition on the newest one a couple of weeks ago and it has worked great.
