View Full Version : [ubuntu] Restricted driver

I tried to set up wireless network in my NEC laptop but I couldn't connect to the Internet. When I checked my hardware devices for my wireless card, it gave this statement.

Proprietary driver are being used to make this computer work properly

Proprietary drivers do not have public source code that Ubuntu developers are free modify. They represent a risk to you because they are only available on the types of computer chosen by the manufacturer, and security updates to them depend solely on the responsiveness of the manufacturer. Ubuntu cannot fix or improve these drivers

FYI: My wireless network card is Atheros Communication AR5006EG 802.11 abg.

Help anyone, explain the statement to me and whether or not I should continue set up my wireless network.

Continue, of course.... :-)

Don't worry. In Windows you use restricted drivers all the time, right? So there's nothing to fear. Free open source drivers are better naturally, but if there are none, or if they underperform, you want the restricted driver.

Do it like this:
