I am looking to set up a home file server. The guides I have read indicated that I should set up the OS on a separate hard drive. What size should this drive be?

I am trying to build this box to be as small and energy efficient as possible, and I don't really like the idea of adding extra drives though.

It's not absolutely necessary to put the OS on it's own drive but it would be good practice incase things go wrong. I would say you could get by with 10 gigs for the OS. In actuality, it would be about a 4 gig install if you install everything under the sun, which you aren't going to do anyway. 20gig is probably as small as you are going to find anyway.

Is it possible for me to use a USB drive to load and boot the OS from?

Sure, if your hardware supports booting from a USB device, no problem.

Thanks for the help!

I'll give it a shot. I was dreading having to purchase a whole drive just to put a 4 gig OS on.

You should be able to cut it down to about 2 gig if you keep it to exactly what you want and don't install anything else. You can pick up a 4 GB USB key for about $20.

I have a 20 gig and several 8 gig drives here I'll send you free if you PM me your address. :) Seriously.

Sure, but if it's international, I might need you to cover shipping. It's not that bad to Mumbai if I use the US postal service. Just let me know and I can tell you what it would be.

Have a read at the two usb entries here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation#head-86a18ab57715d9bb5f0dfaba497a928e67cd73ed

and use the ubuntu server version... you don't need a cli and it will use less diskspace... you don't need a gui to setup filesharing ;)
