Sound problem

I recently purchased a Compaq C762NR and am currently running Gutsy on it. Everything works fine, but when I plug headphones in, sound plays through both the speakers and the headphones. I have tried messing with alsa mixer, but to no avail. What could be the cause of this?

EDIT: I just upgraded to Hardy Heron and solved the problem.
