Acer 5100 won't standby or hibernate

If I try to have the computer standby or hibernate, it freezes, and requires a hard boot. When I put it into hibernate, It flashes a message something like, "trying swap something".. I don't currently have a swap partition, but I don't think this is the problem.

I have an Acer 5100 2 gb ram, 2ghz, running Ubuntu 8.04, using ati restricted drivers, available disk space on / 450mb.
