I remember reading about how Ubuntu may be killing laptop harddrives (link: http://hardware.slashdot.org/hardware/07/10/30/1742258.shtml), and was wondering if 8.04 still suffers from this.

I have a Dell Inspiron 640m with a Seagate ST9120821AS, and when I check my load cycle with smartctl it tells me I'm at 188916 (increasing steadily), which as far as I can tell is impossible.

Should I be worrying about this?

This is not an Ubuntu problem but a problem that all distros have unless they specifically set things up to prevent it (which I believe most haven't). The problem still exists in Hardy and there is a sticky at the top of this forum about it. There are other ways to fix it besides those listed in the sticky but, many people have had luck with those methods.

Alright, thanks. I'd read the sticky, but wasn't sure if it was still in Hardy, and seeing as how it's not just Ubuntu and most linux distro's I guess it is :P.

I'll look into it.
