Hello, community!

I am interested in making a website related to games in Ubuntu. It would have games reviews, tutorials, links, screenshots, and a lot of information. All the games would be runneable in Ubuntu, and if it is not in the official repository, would have an .deb package to download (if it is free software or freeware) or an tutorial showing how to install (if it is a 'close' software (not open software :P) and is available in any website/CD-ROM/DVD).

Do you think is it a good idea? It would have a lot of editors, and the community would help. And, for sure, this forum would be the site's forum :D.

Any ideas?

great idea, anything that would make it easier and more fun for people to switch or try Ubuntu would be great for the community.

I think it is a great idea. There isnt much gaming going on on linux except for games run in cedega, and UT and Doom ;) Gotta love the people who made UT have a native linux version :)

Great idea. Plus some support. I want to get Unreal Editor (the real one, not the clone they use for 2k3/4) to work in Ubuntu, but from what I hear it won't. I'm a mapper and scriptor, and I'd really like to keep running Ubuntu instead of dual booting.

Definately!!!

I'm a linux noob... and have so far got several games including Diablo2 & Doom3 running perfectly on Linux. However, it's been a struggle!

I really think that a centralised place for detailed How Tos for noobs would be widely appreciated. To me, most of the readmes i see packaged with things such as wine, and even the Doom 3 linux *.run, just aren't good enough. It's taken me way too long to work them out, and i'm sure that'd put many people off!

If this site does get off the ground, i'd be happy to help out with tutorials such as this, including screenshots! (a MUST have!)

For sure!
By the way, what do all of you think is the best CMS to use?
Joomla (http://www.joomla.org)
Drupal (http://www.drupal.org)
Or other (what about a wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki)?)EDIT: Please vote the CMS on this topic (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=455985).

i think its a great idea, would be nice to have more Ubuntu specific installation guides for unsupported games.

It also would be cool having reviews and screen shots of all those games in the repos so we have more to go off than the small description in synaptic.

User reviews would be a cool feature where anyone can write a review on a game they tried and send it in for addition to the website, that way it would grow fast.

If Ubuntu could play popular games well then why would you want to use anything else? :p

I would definately like to be involved with the site if possible. I have an idea for a program since you say they can download eb files. It would be similar to itunes with user reviews and commentary as well as screenshots so that they can download games directly into the pc and isntall like synaptic. But a site would be great. We really need this fro linux gaming.

What the itunes thing or the site. If the itunes thing how can I be involved. if the site how can I be involved :)

Ubuntu is the only distro I trust with something like linux gaming.

Well, I know this is ot but how about standardization. Soemthing that will give developers a more coherent platform to develope on. Kind of a console like approach. It won't really be any drastic maybe more about how to interface to hardware and such, not what tools you use to make the game ( though a proof of concept would be cool).

I'd be willing to write up a few reviews of some of my favorite games.

I commonly think about how awesome an idea this is, but I don't think I would be the best person to start something like this because 1. I'm incredibly distracted all the time. 2. I'm not a very good web page designer. 3. I have none of the resources necessary such as web hosting. I could definately contribute though. It seems like some of the time, I seem to be one of only a few people who know how to get a native game to run and work in linux. Ubuntu's game support is not too bad, but could definately be much better. Gentoo probably has the most in it's repository followed by Debian and FreeBSD. Ubuntu probably lags somewhere behind those 3.

Any further explanation? Any links?

I totally agree. I started a web forum and blog once, with this in mind I think but I never publicised it because, as I mentioned above, I'm not the best kind of person to run one of these things. A lot of usability, technological advancement, and platform adoption is directly linked to gaming. This is important.

I don't know either firsthand - though I have considered using drupal for a project that I should launch with some friends - however that project was put on ice "untill further notice" - so I never got to using it.

But I like the way you can extend drupal.
