I have been playing Doom 3 last couple days and it has worked great. Easy install, no config issues, game looks GREAT and single multiplayer both worked fine. Only change I made was to change sound to OSS (in game) and bumped up resolution.
I hate to pay for software but I though I would it when I saw it at Target do $20.

Amen to that. Doom 3 runs smoother, looks quite a bit better, and loads faster than it did on Hoary. Also, I'm not sure, but there might have been a new update that helped speed things up. Doom 3 has never been so scary!
My new sound card (Chaintech AV 710) self-installed perfectly on Breezy, allowing me to hear Doom 3 on 5.1 surround sound. It was a great buy, and I'd recommend it to anyone.

It didn't work well for me i have audigy 2 ZS
First surround sound didn't work but i got fixed by typing this " doom3 +set s_alsa_pcm surround51" and "doom3 +set s_numberOfSpeakers 6"
But the center and the surround channels changes places.
FSAA and AF didn't work from the ingame settings (for all games) but it did work to use the nvidia settings from gnome.

Installed Doom3 last night and WOW!!!
I haven't got a beast of a graphics card, but it runs much smoother than on Windows, and at a higher quality!
Luvin it :)

Yep, inspired by this I reinstalled it and it's certainly working better under Breezy for me than it did on Hoary. Sound was choppy until I set it to oss and restarted, now it's nice and clear. My graphics card is fairly old (geForce MMX 64 mB) so can't have all the eyecandy but looks pretty good, though does have the annoying habit of slowing up just when things get a bit manic :).
Of course breezy can't compensate for the dodgy design of Doom that relies entirely on 'jack-in-box' surprises.

Nope, used the Linux installer from ID and my old Windows CDs and key - straightforward. You should find what you need at their site (http://zerowing.idsoftware.com/linux/doom/), though their ftp was being hit pretty hard when I checked last, no doubt cos of Quake 4, so you may have to find a mirror if you want the installer.

hi, need help here... how do you change the sound to OSS "in game"? or did you change the "multimedia systems selector" under System/Preferences in GNOME?
thanks, coz everything works fine for my doom 3 in breezy, except tat darn irritating, buzzling, distorted sound.

I love the Doom III engine games, they run AMAZING on Breezy Badger!
and the same goes for Quake 4, on windows with the same config file after 30-45 mins it overheats and crashes my system, on ubuntu linux I can play for at least 2 hours and nothing happens at all.

Just got my new computer andfired up doom3 and quake 4, both so scary I almost crapped my pants. Runs really smooth even on my new low-budget computer

Listening to all you guys banging on about Doom 3 I decided to download the demo last night. I am running on only a 64mb Geforce 4 with 1.5GB of Ram and the games runs fine. Only gets a bit sticky when things get manic.
Bloody hell this game is scary as hell. The graphics are F*&k*(g awesome. What makes it better is that is is actually playing in Linux. I doubt I would get the same performance out of this game on Windows.
If Doom 3 is this good whats Doom 4 like? I bet you need a bloody 128mb card to run it?

I agree with those saying it's not-so-hot on Linux for the same reasons. No AF, No AA, No Vsync, no surround sound, mediocre performance.

Used to play on hoary..
Now when I run doom3, all I get is the red planet. No menus or anything, and I have to exit by killing the process. This appears in Xorg logs:
(EE) fglrx(0): === [R200DALSetControllerConfigForRemap] === CWDDC ControllerSetConfig failed: 6 - 0
I'm using the newest ati drivers which work otherwise just fine.. Has anyone has got ideas on this?

first time when i played doom 3, it raised the goosebumps on my skin tremendously... even now, whenever i get a sudden attack from some dark and sinister corner, i physically "swing" away from the screen! =P
but nowadays, it's no longer a case of being frightened by the game, it's turned into, "Hey, COME ON! where are the demons, let me frag them all!!!" like the No Fear t-shirts say, "Face Your Fear" and then doom 3 doesn't seem tat scary anymore. hehe
but yes, this is wat games should be about ~ the ability to absorb the player into the scenario. and doom 3 does tat pretty well.
with doom 3 on linux, it's true tat a couple of things are crippled, but in terms of responsiveness, it flat out beats my windows version, both running on the same laptop...

Speaking of Id games, I wonder if Quake Wars will support linux. the screenshots looked pretty sweet.

Inclined to agree, haven't tried Doom 3 yet but Quake 4 is stunning even on a Geforce 5700FX (256Mb)

I played both DOOM3 and Quake 4. I have to say that I'm impressed! Both games look geat. I didn't expect that my 9600XT could run these games so well!

Got a Geforce FX 5600 here and I never thought I'd see such nice performance out of it. I remember playing the Doom 3 demo on Windows and having to play at medium settings at 800x600. Here on Ubuntu I've been running at high settings at 1024x768 and it's been far smoother. :D
edit: how do you check framerate on either of these demos?
