Rythmbox plays ipod songs but ipod can't see them

After synching my ipod nano with rythmbox ipod reports 'no songs'. I'm not sure if it was copying tunes to the ipod from rythmbox or trying to copy tunes from the ipod in Gutsy. But now the ipod can't play any tunes although Rythmbox can! It sort of defeats the purpose of a portable music player. Shame on you Apple. Does anyone know how to get around this?
