Ok, I see that the game is free. Great.

Now where do I get a copy of the game, how do I install it, etc.

I've found a lot of very loose information, including the official page, http://ja2.dragonriders.de

They provide very little to no information on what files you actually need to download, how to download, where to download, etc. It seems that the game is only available to people who already have it or something..

Help!

Only the source code to the game is free. You still need to buy the game itself to be able to play it with the updated code contained within Stracciatella.

That doesn't sound 'free' to me. I'm not gonna go buy some tired old game that isn't getting support (as I've read) from its makers just so I can add an italian co-name to it.

I'm not directing my frown at you. Thanks for the info dude. I'm just directing my frown at whatever the heck is going on with this 'free game'. Sounds more like a 'free mod' to a commercial game.

Ugh, I just wanna play some turn-based jagged alliance killing! That game was so much fun, but not worth $30 in today's world.

From the looks of it, it's mostly being done as the original game was built against older libs. Newer distros are having troubles simply trying to run it. For people who already have it, it might make the difference for them being able to play it. Code released like that is very similar to what 3D Realms & id have been doing... releasing the engine under GPL, but still selling the data. Useful for getting a game ported to other OS's or in this case, on newer distros.
