I was thinking about getting a new headset (that is earphones + mic) and I was wondering what the Ubuntu gaming community is using / suggests.

I would like it to most definitely be easily usable in Ubuntu (plug and play), very comfortable, and I would prefer wired. Also, I would like the retail price to be under $150USD, preferably under $100USD.

So first, what are you using for gaming? and why?

And second, can you recommend anything that might fit my requirements?

I only use Plantronics. After years of using headsets, they last the longest. Throwing them at the monitor when I get killed in Counter Strike, or getting ganked in WoW by a Horde that is 20 levels above me ](*,). BTW, Plantronic headsets will take out a LCD monitor , ouch, that lesson cost me 200 bucks for a new monitor .

I use the eDimensional Audio FX (not the AudioFX Pro 5+1!). I think it is fantastic. It has a subwoofer-like sound whenever there is bass (explosions, etc).

I've used Plantronics headsets and they sound great too. I REALLY like Plantronics, just not as much as the Audio FX. The Plantronics in general have fantastic treble and makes music come alive with background instruments you've never heard before. I don't listen to music, and if I happen to on a blue moon it's dance which has a ton of bass, so I really don't care that the Plantronics has superior treble.

But do yourself a favor and NEVER buy a logitech headset.

None of the headsets I've had last longer than 6 months or so. Considering I use them 16/7 it's not that weird.

I assume that both of these are USB, so how is the plug and play feature on Ubuntu?

I just tried my old USB headset and, although I can get sound out of them, the various apps don't seem to want to use it... they continue to play out of my computer speakers. Are there any Ubuntu friendly USB headsets?

I've never had any luck with USB headsets - when I tried them a couple of years ago I couldn't get skype to work with any application using sound; there may be some though. I use non-USB headsets with an Audigy 4.

Gotcha. I was thinking about going that way, since it would also make the headset a little more versatile... such as using it for an IPod.
