I'm new to Ubuntu and Linux, so please keept that in mind. I'm looking for the tools to do C++ development. I'm assuming that I need the complier and an IDE. In looking through the package manager, I find G++ 4.2 which I assume is the compiler to use.

That leaves the question what IDEs can anyone recommend for doing this type of development. I am an experienced programmer (IBM mainframe and MSFT) so I'm not looking for a C++ tutorial, just good tools.

Thanks for your advice.

John

A lot of people rely on editor tools like Vi/Vim Emacs and consider it sufficient for developing.

If you're looking for something simple and minimalistic there's Geany:

sudo aptitude instally geany

Here's a good threads that talking about different kinds of IDEs:

Thanks zOmbie,

You pointed me to exactly the information I needed.

When I first started programming C I used the equivilent of vi but can't see any reason why not to take advantage of newer tools, so I'm going to give Anjuta a try.
