If you use firefox you can use the extension DownThemAll

or if you want to use the download manager inseide the desktop you can try wget (in the terminal) or it's GUI gwget - both installable from Synaptic

That is why i recommended the DownThemAll extension for firefox - you can get it here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/201

From it's description:
DownThemAll is all you can desire from a download manager: it features an advanced accelerator that increases speed up to 400% and it allows you to pause and resume downloads at any time.

I use Kget, which I love, and I'm pretty sure it will work in Gnome. If not, check Synaptic for wget (which I never figured out) and look for a GUI front end for it.

You can use KGet in combination with Konqueror. It integrates very well and offers advanced features like resume, auto-shutdown, system tray integration.
